Lacy Perry was surprised with a promotion to second lieutenant at Monday's meeting of the Franklin-based Civil Air Patrol Composite Squadron 501 at Venango Regional Airport. Perry's husband, Ryan, and son, River, placed her bars on her shoulder during the oath. The Franklin Civil Air Patrol squadron has about 25 members and meets at 6:30 p.m. Mondays at the airport. Commander Jason Beers wishes there was more involvement locally. "We're the best kept secret around," Beers said. (By Richard Sayer)
River Perry, 15, received the Wright Brothers award at Monday’s Franklin Civil Air Patrol meeting. The award is given to cadets who pass written and physical tests and demonstrate leadership among their peers. Perry, the son of Ryan and Lacy Perry, was congratulated by state Sen. Scott Hutchinson, who is a member of the Legislative Civil Air Patrol. The Franklin unit’s cadet program features activities for young people in aerospace, communications and search and rescue missions. (By Richard Sayer)
