Man charged with attempted murder in hospital incident

A Clintonville man is facing felony charges, including attempted murder, for strangling a UPMC Northwest employee on Saturday.

A criminal complaint says that at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday, an officer with UPMC was called to a unit for an incident in which a patient, Jack Caylor, 34, strangled a hospital employee.

When Caylor saw the officer he told him that he “strangled her because … he was not being released,” the complaint said.

Video footage of the incident showed that Caylor retrieved a sock from the left side pocket of his hoodie and watched the employee for a period of time while rolling the sock in his hand, the complaint said.

Caylor then approached the employee, placed the sock around her neck from behind and proceeded to tighten the sock, cutting off air and blood flow, according to the complaint.

Another patient jumped from his chair and assisted the employee in removing Caylor and the sock, the complaint said.

The complaint said that “had no intervention happened the defendant would have caused the death of the victim.”

Caylor has been charged with felony counts of criminal attempt-murder of the first degree and aggravated assault-attempts to cause serious bodily injury or causes injury with extreme indifference.

He was also charged with misdemeanor counts of simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and strangulation- applying pressure to the throat or neck.

Caylor was arraigned Sunday before district judge Matthew Kirtland and was placed in Venango County jail with bail denied.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled May 13 in Central Court.
