Man whose body was found in garage identified

From staff reports

Butler state police have identified the man whose remains were discovered Monday after a fire had been extinguished at a garage in Parker in Allegheny Township, Butler County.

Police said the man was Mark Durnell, 48, of Parker.

State police had responded to a residence on Locust Lane in Parker on Monday morning for a report of a protection from abuse violation. A Parker woman had told Butler County 911 she had an active PFA against Durnell and that he was at her residence with a rifle, police said.

Durnell left the residence and walked toward a detached garage, and the woman said she heard a single gunshot and then saw smoke coming from the garage, police said.

Police said they arrived and secured a perimeter, then cleared the main residence after determining Durnell was most likely inside the fully-engulfed garage.

The blaze was successfully extinguished after firefighters were allowed to enter the scene, police said.

Durnell’s body was discovered in the fire rubble, along with pieces of a rifle, police said.
