New stop signs in place in Franklin

From staff reports

The City of Franklin has announced that new stop signs have been added at the intersections of Elk and Ninth streets and Elk and Fourth streets.

At Elk and Ninth, one sign has been added for southbound traffic on Elk. And at Elk and Fourth, signs have been added for traffic bound in either direction on Elk.

“We ask that all drivers be mindful of these new signs as they drive in town,” the city said.

The ordinance adding the stop signs received final approval at city council’s meeting this month.

The stop sign at Elk and Ninth was intended particularly to increase the safety of students crossing the street to reach the bus stop, and the stops at Fourth were meant to mitigate speeding issues near the boat launch, according to city council discussions in the past few meetings.

Another ordinance that would add stop signs in both directions on 14th Street at its intersection with Elk Street also passed its first reading at this month’s meeting and will be up for final approval in July.
