Oil City woman convicted of cruelty to animals

A jury has convicted an Oil City woman on charges of cruelty to animals following a trial in Erie County. The charges were first filed in 2022.

According to her Facebook page, Smalley is the owner of Puppywood Shihtzu, which she has operated since 2012. The Facebook page for Puppywood Shihtzu shows posts advertising dogs as recently as August.

On Jan. 9, Jaime Smalley, 49, was convicted of a felony count of aggravated cruelty to animals and one misdemeanor count of neglect of an animal following a trial by jury, according to a press release from the Erie County District Attorney’s office, which also noted she was found not guilty of two other misdemeanor counts of neglect of an animal.

Smalley was convicted “for failing to provide the needed vet care to an injured and neglected small mixed-breed dog in December of 2022,” the press release said

Her sentencing is scheduled for March 16 in Erie County before Judge John J. Mead.
