Overdose task force visits Rocky Grove students

Members of the Venango County Overdose Task Force interacted with Rocky Grove High School students during the students’ lunch period Wednesday.

Students were invited to spin the “Wheel of Misfortune,” which featured different categories of drugs.

Once a student spun the wheel and selected a category, a task force member asked the student a question.

Students who participated were given an eraser and were entered into a drawing for a gift card.

One student who spun the wheel selected the category “cocaine”, and the student was asked by Franklin state police trooper Cassie Miller “Does cocaine cause addiction?”

The options were, “yes,” “no,” or “it depends,” and the student correctly answered “yes.”

The task force began going into schools in 2017 or 2018 but then went on hiatus for two years because of COVID, said Michelle McGee, the Franklin state police community service officer.

The task force has also visited Oil City and Venango Catholic high schools this year and has several other school visits planned.

“It is a great opportunity to interact with students and not take up any of their time in the classroom,” said McGee. “Even if they don’t come up and talk with us, they can see our banner and know who we are.”
