Sandycreek students learn all about the weather

Meteorologist Tom Atkins of WJET-TV in Erie throws “sleet” up in the air during Friday’s assembly at Sandycreek Elementary School.

Sandycreek Elementary School students experienced an engaging, multi-seasonal weather lesson during a visit from WJET-TV meteorologist Tom Atkins, who shared his passion for weather and his journey into meteorology. Atkins demonstrated tools like a rain gauge and weather radio, answered questions about storm chasing and weather phenomena, and introduced students to different types of precipitation, including the lesser-known graupel. He used interactive bins filled with confetti to represent seasonal weather changes and made learning fun with hands-on participation. The presentation concluded with a film about the historic May 31, 1985, tornadoes that struck northwest Pennsylvania, further connecting students to their local weather history.
