Self-defense classes to start Thursday at OC YWCA

Freedom NWPA and the Oil City YWCA will offer a monthly self-defense class this year at the Oil City YW starting this Thursday.

The class be will be held 6:15 to 8:30 p.m. and is free of charge due to sponsorship from Freedom NWPA.

No pre-registration is required, and children 12 and over may also attend with a parent or guardian.

The classes will continue at the same time on the first Thursday of each month throughout this year.

A press release promoting the class says human trafficking awareness works hand-in-hand with self-defense training.

Self-defense encompasses training to escape a personal threat safely, going beyond defending against attackers to also include an awareness of one’s surroundings and the people in one’s environment. Self-defense also includes being educated about all types of abuse.

Through these classes, Freedom NWPA and the Oil City YWCA hope to educate residents on how human trafficking presents itself in the Oil Region and what to look for based on trends in the area.
