Semi crash shuts down I-80; orange juice spills onto road

A crash involving two semi-trucks left one person injured, sent lots of orange juice onto the highway, and closed down a section of Interstate 80 in the southern part of Venango County for several hours Wednesday morning.

Brayden Rea, the assistant chief of Clintonville Volunteer Fire Department, said that at about 4 a.m. Wednesday, a semi-truck hauling orange juice slammed into another semi that was parked along the interstate with a flat tire.

The parked semi was hauling engine parts for a locomotive, Rea said.

“It struck the (parked) semi so hard with the passenger side that it ripped the cab off and the trailer jackknifed and ripped open,” Rea said.

Rea added that the entire load of individually boxed orange juice spilled out onto the roadway and “not a single one was left in the trailer. It was a total loss on the load.”

Due to the acid in the orange juice, an environmental hazard company, McCutcheon Enterprises, was called to evaluate the spill, according to Rea.

“They weren’t too concerned about it but they wanted to check the acid,” he said.

Rea said one of the truck drivers sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital in Grove City.

Rea noted that Pennsylvania’s Move Over Law requires drivers to merge into a farther lane when they can and slow down when they encounter an emergency situation.

Interstate 80 westbound was closed from Exit 42 (Route 38/Emlenton) to Exit 35 (Route 308/Clintonville) for several hours, according to a release from PennDOT.

The highway reopened at about 11 a.m., Rea said.

Franklin state police, PennDOT and Emlenton and Superior ambulance services were also called to the scene.
