Sugarcreek man faces charges after domestic dispute

From staff reports

A Sugarcreek man is facing charges, including terroristic threats and recklessly endangering another person, after police say he struck his wife several times early Sunday morning.

Sugarcreek Borough police said in a criminal complaint they arrived at the home of Earl Raup, Jr., 63, on Front Street at 12:26 a.m. Sunday to find a woman in the kitchen on the phone with 911.

The complaint said the woman was unstable and confused, “holding the back of her head saying how much it hurt.” She had to be asked several times what her and her husband’s names were before she understood the question and told officers her husband’s name is Earl, the complaint said.

The complaint said officers found Raup in the residence where “the odor of an alcoholic beverage was extremely strong.”

Officers said Raup couldn’t stand up without leaning against a wall, that his eyes were bloodshot and watery and his speech was slurred to the point “he spoke in almost a mumble,” the complaint said.

Raup was taken into custody without incident, according to the complaint.

The woman told police the two had been drinking in different locations in the area and when they returned to the residence, she began to pack for a trip to Arizona, the complaint said.

The complaint said the woman told officers she and Raup began to argue about the trip after Raup told her he didn’t want her to leave on the trip and wasn’t happy she was going.

When the argument escalated, Raup struck the woman on the back of the neck, head and back, the complaint said.

Raup was charged with misdemeanor counts of terroristic threats, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person and a summary count of harassment.

He was arraigned before district judge Matthew Kirtland.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled Aug. 28 in Venango County Central Court.
