Volunteers needed to help with project aiding veterans

From staff reports

The Oil Valley Quilters Guild and Quilters Cupboard in Seneca will host a sewing event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, to create quilts for Venango County veterans in recognition of National Quilts of Valor Sewing Day.

The event is free and open to the public, and the quilters are hoping to have a large gathering of the community. They will need people to sew, pressers, fabric cutters and coordinators to help complete several quilt tops within the day.

Fabric and patterns will be provided.

Volunteers are welcome to come for either the entire day, or an hour or two.

Members of the Oil Valley Quilters are hoping to start a Quilts of Valor chapter in Venango County. The current president, Michelle Knoch, was approached by Harry Whittemore, director of Veterans Affairs in Venango County, to make several quilts this year to be given out on Veterans Day.

The Quilts of Valor Foundation is a national group that honors U.S. veterans and active military members. The group has honored 373,394 veterans with quilts as of last year, with the local Oil Valley Quilters Guild honoring six in recent years.

For more information, call Knoch at (814) 671-7323, Karlene Johnson at (814) 758-1649, or visit the Quilters Cupboard on Route 257 in Seneca.
