20th Annual Coon and Fox Festival

Mostly Brass performs classic music after The Pledge of Allegiance during the 20th Annual Coon and Fox Festival outside of Franklin on Friday evening.

Bluegrass and brass instruments combined for an evening of live performances at the Venango County Coon and Fox Club on Friday evening.

Mostly Brass kicked off the 20th Annual Coon and Fox Festival at 6 p.m. with campers packing the club’s property, nestled in a valley along Two Mile Run.

Local favorites, the Pine Valley Boys, opened up the bluegrass tunes with a cover of Johnny Cash’s Folsom Prison Blues.

Tug Creek, of Ohio, plucked away on strings with the fiddle, guitar and upright bass soon afterwards.

Another local band, whose roots go back decades at the Fox and Coon Club was Hidden Drive, strumming out tunes until the end of the scheduled performances.

With campers and tents strewn around the creek front property, the music continued late into the night around campfires according to Lynn Ghering, of Franklin, who camps at the bluegrass festivals there each year.

Ghering said, “We love it. After it’s all over, they jam and we walk around listening to the music.”

The weekend festival continues today, with a dozen bluegrass bands performing for free from 12:45 to 10 p.m.

The festival will conclude on Sunday with a church service from 10 to 11 a.m.
