Early entrepreneur starts making, selling bags in Oil City

Rhonda Cubbons, of Plumer, looks over all of the handmade goods at the Oil City Curb Market on Thursday. Ten-year-old Abigail Grams and her grandmother, Larriette Grams, both of Cranberry Township, have both baked goods that they make together, as well as handcrafted items that each of them make.

At this year’s Oil City Curb Market, 10-year-old Abigail Grams, of Cranberry Township, has been getting her feet wet as a young entrepreneur.

She has been selling handmade bags at her grandmother’s booth on Central Avenue all summer and now while back being home schooled.

Her grandmother, Larriette Grams, has been a vendor at the market for years and taught her how to sew this past winter. In May, Larriette Grams bought her granddaughter all of the goods needed to start a craft business for her birthday.

With more than ten bags sold this year, Abigail Grams’ handmade creations have found a market themselves. Larriette Grams said that the unique bags have found many uses; even being used as carryon bags for air travel.

Although Larriette Grams had plans of retiring from doing the Curb Market after this year, she said that she’ll be back next year because of her granddaughter’s passion for making things and selling them. “She pulled me out of retirement,” said Larriette Grams.

The Oil City Curb Market’s last day will be next Thursday, but vendors also plan to set up on Saturday, Sept. 13, for the first Allegheny River Music and Arts Festival.
