Event to raise money for water fund scheduled

As Reno’s “do not consume” water advisory is set to hit the three-week mark on Friday, the community and Wanango Country Club are stepping up to help.

An event to raise money for the water fund will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Wanango, with AC/DC cover band Hellz Bellz performing.

Wanango owner Nate Neely said the plan is to have the fundraiser outside by the pool area, but it will be held inside in the event of inclement weather.

Cost to attend is $5, and “there will be an additional bucket out for people to donate,” Neely said. The event is for people ages 21 and older.

Meanwhile, the Reno Neighborhood Association has been offering a volunteer opportunity for community members, which includes distributing water to residents who are unable to pick up their water on distribution days.

Jessica Struthers, the association’s chair, said Tuesday that the distributions at the Reno Volunteer Fire Department have been “going well.”

She said about 15 families showed up for last Thursday’s distribution, and “Friday actually doubled. We had a steady stream of people.”

The families, she said, have expressed gratitude for the water and there has been “a lot of people” offering to volunteer.

Struthers also said the association is grateful to the YMCA and The Pointe, both in Oil City, for offering their shower facilities to Reno residents.

“I’m glad that those resources are available to them,” Struthers said.
