Food, treats business opens on Allegheny Boulevard

Mac’s Snax officially opened its doors in Franklin on Thursday, just in time for the summer season.

The roadside shop on Allegheny Boulevard is owned by Mark and Chris Berringer, of Rocky Grove, and offers a variety of sandwiches, salads and ice cream treats.

The Berringers started making plans to set up shop in November when the former Hovis Frosty Treat closed, leaving the building vacant.

“For over 20 years, Mark has wanted to buy an ice cream stand. We kept looking at the building, and when it went up for sale, he was ready to jump on it,” Chris Berringer said.

Chris Berringer retired from the Visiting Nurses Association of Venango County in March in order to pursue the business.

“I just love to cook and bake,” she said.

Mark Berringer continues to work at Schake Industries in Seneca while also helping with the business.

Chris Berringer said the shop’s name came from the combination of initials with her husband – “Mark and Chris’ Snax.”

She said business has been good so far, and people are enjoying the sweet treats.

“Everybody comes to the window with a smile on their face because they love ice cream,” Chris Berringer said.

Mac’s Snax, at 343 Allegheny Blvd. in Franklin, is open seven days a week, April through September.
