The Clarion County Airport hosted its second annual Appalachian Mountain Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) event Friday and Saturday, drawing eight aircraft and pilots from as far as Rhode Island. Competitors tested their skills in various challenges, with highlights including private jet pilot Doug Auclair’s restored 1949 Stenson 108, a gleaming aluminum plane he’s invested over $160,000 into. Auclair, visiting Clarion for the first time, tied for first in the spot-landing event, while Dennis Rowe of Vandergrift, flying “Hee Haw,” placed second overall behind winner Matt Dorssom. The event, organized by Discover Clarion County and the national STOL group, drew attention for its mix of competition, aviation craftsmanship, and community spirit.
