Nifty at 90: Grandmother known for love of citrus, work at Polk Center

This week’s Nifty at 90 feature spotlights Franklin resident Shirley Ann Renninger, who was born in 1935 and grew up in a modest home on Old Uniontown Road. The oldest of four, Shirley’s early years were filled with music, hard work, and family traditions — from gathering nightcrawlers for her uncle’s bait shop to sharing her mother’s love of playing organ and singing. At 17, she married Robert Burton Renninger, a decorated Army drill sergeant, and spent years traveling between U.S. bases before settling back in Franklin. After her husband’s passing, Shirley built a fulfilling career as a caregiver at Polk Center. Known for her dancing, love of lemons, and pristine housekeeping, she now enjoys time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always ensuring no one leaves her home hungry.
