Youth Connection agency needs more mentors

From staff reports

The Youth Connection agency is seeking mentors for local youth who can benefit from having a positive role model in their lives.

The program currently has a waiting list of youths in need of mentors.

Youth Connection, formerly Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Oil Region, is a program of the Family Service and Children’s Aid Society. The program is designed to build a match between mentor and youth based on shared interests, personality and preferences.

“Mentoring is a win-win situation for the local youth, the community and the mentors,” Youth Connection program director Jessica Walters said in a press release.

Walters said youth who are matched with a mentor are less likely to abuse drugs and alcohol and make more responsible decisions.

Mentored youth also attend school more regularly, achieve higher grades and have a better relationship with their parents or guardians and peers, Walters said.

“Mentoring relationships are an opportunity to make a lasting connection with a youth, allowing them to feel heard, understood and valued,” Walters said.

Another way to help with Youth Connection is to join its advisory committee, which is looking for volunteers.
