2 WWII veterans will receive Quilt of Valor

From staff reports

Quilt of Valor presentations will be made to World War II veterans John Ward Sr., of Oil City, and the Rev. Lyle Langdon, of Titusville, at noon on Saturday at the Seneca Fire Hall.

Ward, an Army private first class, served from July 25, 1942, to Nov. 20, 1945. He was in Normandy and northern France; Rhineland, Germany; Antwerp, Belgium; and London. He was with the 405th anti-aircraft gun battalion and guarded German prisoners.

Ward received the following citations: Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal, European-American Service Medal, four Bronze Stars, Victory Medal and a citation from the king of Belgium.

Langdon, a sergeant in the Army Air Corps, served from Nov. 14, 1942, to Aug. 30, 1945. He sailed for Africa, and from there he flew to Sicily and then sailed through the Mediterranean Sea to Scotland where he took a train to Lincoln, England. From there he flew to Abbeyville, France.

When the war was over, he sailed to British Guinea where, due to his position as a classification specialist, he interviewed soldiers as they came through. Langdon flew on many missions and returned home by flying from British Guinea to Miami.

He received the following citations: presidential citation twice (his entire unit), and thus it has an oak leaf cluster on it, and at least three medals.

The quilts for Ward and Langdon were made by the Oil Valley Quilters.
