Explosion, fire controlled at Petrolia petroleum plant

PETROLIA, Pa. (AP) — A fire at a western Pennsylvania petroleum processing plant is under control, though 911 dispatchers say there’s a report of one injury.

Officials at the Sonneborn Corp. plant in Petrolia declined immediate comment.

Butler County 911 dispatchers say the incident was reported shortly before 1:30 p.m. Thursday and most fire crews were being released from the scene by 3 p.m.

The Butler Eagle, which first reported the incident, says crews had been called in from surrounding counties.

The plant about 45 miles northeast of Pittsburgh makes waxes and other products including petrolatum, which is used in baby oil and petroleum jellies.

A storage tank at the plant caught fire in January 2014, but nobody was injured.

The cause and extent of the fire and a reported explosion was not immediately clear.
