Fraudulent texts allege failure to pay turnpike tolls

The Philadelphia Courts issued a statewide fraud alert Sunday warning residents about a scam text message claiming to be from the Traffic Division of Philadelphia Municipal Court about a “toll violation.” The message instructs recipients to appear for a hearing or pay a civil penalty using a QR code, but officials say the texts are fraudulent and courts will never request payments or personal information through text messages. Consumers are urged to ignore the messages and avoid scanning the QR code, and anyone who receives one or becomes a victim should contact local police, the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Bureau of Consumer Protection or the Federal Trade Commission.
