Franklin board hears from students enjoying Maker Space

Franklin Area School Board members heard Monday from a group of engaged and enthusiastic students about the classes and activities taking place in the Maker Space at Franklin High School.

Beginning with the students who attended the BEST Robotics (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) competition Oct. 10-11 at Grove City and continuing with several students who are working on other aspects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), several classmates explained to the board the work they are doing.

The students who competed in the BEST event achieved significantly higher placement than in previous years, said eighth-grade teacher Rene Miller.

The Franklin team came in third place in the game competition and fourth place overall, which put them only one place away from being able to travel to the national competition in Denver this year.

In addition, the team was awarded the most Robust Machine trophy, which designated its robot as having the least problems and the fewest breakdowns.

The board also heard from students who were working on drones and on robotics for the VEX competition. All the students expressed the pleasure of being able to work in the new Maker Space, as a team, and in collaboration with other students.

Senior high school gifted teacher Tim Heffernan, who also instructs in technology, told the board the district is doing some cutting edge work with the students in the Maker Space.

In other business Monday, the board approved a request from the operations committee to purchase six basketball standards (backboards and rims) to replace the current ones in the high school gym.

The cost of the six standards is not to exceed $48,782.
