Ohio man gets life sentence in Venango court on sex charges

A Warren, Ohio, man was sentenced last week in Venango County Court to a life prison term for sexual offenses he committed against a 14-year-old Oil City girl.

Joseph Snyder, 23, had pleaded guilty in December in the Venango County case to charges of child pornography and corruption of minors-defendant age 18 or above. Some other charges against him were dropped in exchange for his guilty pleas.

The charges were filed by Franklin state police in September.

This was the third time Snyder was either convicted of or pleaded guilty to charges involving sexual offenses against children, thus necessitating the mandatory life sentence, according to the Venango County District Attorney’s office.

Neither of the other two cases were in Venango County, and at least one case was in the Warren, Ohio, area.

Venango County President Judge Matthew Kirtland sentenced Snyder to life in prison Friday on both counts and 36 months probation on the child pornography charge.

The 36 months probation is mandatory for certain sex offenses, the DA’s office said.

Snyder was accused in the Venango County case of having inappropriate contact with the 14-year-old girl he met over the internet.

The girl told police she had met Snyder over Facebook several months prior and became friends and that later she and Snyder exchanged explicit messages but no photos, Franklin state police had said in a criminal complaint.

The girl admitted she and Snyder had sex multiple times and both had taken pictures and videos on their phones, the complaint said.

Police interviewed Snyder at the Franklin barracks, and he said they had sex at his residence in Warren, Ohio, seven or eight times, the complaint said.

Snyder said he would pick the girl up at her friend’s house or random stores in Oil City and drive her straight back to his residence and later he would drop her off at random places around Oil City, never taking her home, according to the complaint.
