Police warn of scams

From staff reports

After a 46-year-old Rouseville woman was swindled while attempting to buy a vehicle from Craigslist, Franklin state police are asking the public to be aware of fraudulent schemes.

The woman was interested in a vehicle on Craigslist and was instructed to buy it through eBay sometime between Feb. 18 and March 3. An email she received instructed her to purchase eBay and MoneyPak cards and to send the numbers on each card. She never heard back from the seller and later found out they were using a fake name.

Police are advising residents not to wire money via Western Union, not to pay for items with gift cards by giving the numbers over the phone and, if buying a car, that it is best to meet face-to-face at a notary with a title in hand.
