Pennsylvania Western University has received nearly $399,000 from the state to launch a Deaf Education Apprenticeship Program, aimed at addressing the shortage of certified teachers for deaf and hard-of-hearing students in Pennsylvania. Led by professor Karen Wise Lindeman, the program combines hands-on training with university coursework and includes eight $30,000 scholarships to help cover tuition. Alongside this initiative, PennWest is expanding its offerings with a new 30-credit deaf education certificate, preparing educators for high-need roles through training in sign language, inclusive teaching, and advocacy.
