Children learn about safety during event at fairgrounds

From staff reports

Second-graders from across Venango and Forest counties gathered at the Venango County Fairgrounds on Thursday for Progressive Agricultural Day.

Each year, the event attracts about 500 students who learn a variety of safety lessons.

Coordinated by the Safe Kids Clarion-Venango Coalition and Keystone SMILES CLC, the day featured nearly two dozen stations manned by volunteers from several different government agencies, not-for-profit groups and area businesses.

“It is a busy day, getting the children to as many stations as possible, but it’s an even busier time preparing for the event,” said Kelly Mong of Safe Kids Clarion-Venango.

“Countless hours go into arranging for sponsors, coordinating with participating schools and putting together a safety presentation, but it’s more than worth it once the kids arrive and start to learn and have fun.”

Among the topics covered Thursday were bicycle safety and helmets, first aid, boating and water safety, handwashing and germs, sun safety, Lyme disease, large equipment safety, handling-visiting large and small animals, tobacco use prevention, butter-making and growing plants.

The Venango County event was the second Progressive Agricultural Day hosted this year by the Safe Kids Clarion-Venango Coalition and Keystone SMILES CLC. The first was held May 11 at Clarion County Park, where children from Clarion County and some from Forest County attended.
