Sugarcreek chief issues advice during motorcycle safety month

May is motorcycle safety awareness month, and the warmer and brighter days are leading to more motorcyclists out on the roads.

Sugarcreek police chief Bob Wenner has issued some advice to keep area residents and motorcyclists safe during these upcoming months.

“As the weather gets nicer in general, people tend to speed up. Please don’t…just enjoy the trip,” Wenner said.

He added that motorists should also be “extra aware” of motorcyclists and bicyclists around this time of year.

Wenner said people speed up now because they “aren’t as concerned with certain weather conditions.”

Wenner said that, in general, “as the speed of your vehicle increases, so should the space between your vehicle and other vehicles.”

Motorists, he said, should give themselves enough time to slow down in case of any occurrences.

And Wenner outlined some tips for how motorcyclists can keep themselves safe as well, including being cognizant of debris still on the road from winter.

“I always commend those motorcyclists who wear bright colors or reflective vests to help enhance their visibility,” Wenner said.
