Tech center students plant tree to observe Arbor Day

From staff reports

Students in the Venango Technology Center natural resources program planted a small red bud tree on Seneca Street in Oil City last Friday in celebration of Arbor Day.

The new red bud was planted to replace a damaged, dying Persian parrotia and matches the red bud across the street in front of the National Transit Building.

The city’s Shade Tree Commission will further its commitment to managing the city’s trees as the Central Avenue block renovation is completed later this summer. The commission has worked jointly with the city to redesign the block.

Ty Ryen, a service forester with the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Bureau of Forestry, presented a flag to members of the Shade Tree Commission in honor of Oil City’s 21st consecutive Tree City USA Community recognition.

Mayor Bill Moon Jr. attended the celebration to read a proclamation that formally acknowledged the Arbor Day celebration.
