Sassafras Street work to begin next week

From staff reports

Work on the Sassafras Street reconstruction project in Franklin is expected to begin Monday, or shortly thereafter.

The improvement project on the 1300 block of Sassafras Street, similar to the one completed last year on nearby Myrtle Street, will include street paving as well as the installation of new water and sewer lines and the construction of a retaining wall.

Franklin City Council awarded a contract for the work in June to Advanced Contracting of Stoneboro in the amount of $344,457.50

The project is a joint effort of the City of Franklin, which has devoted Community Development Block Grant funds from fiscal years 2013 and 2014 for the street improvements and retaining wall, and the Franklin General Authority, which will fund the water and sewer upgrades.

During the project, there will be no on-street parking from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and possibly some Saturdays.

The parking restrictions were put in place to allow sufficient room for the construction equipment to operate and provide for the safety of residents and their vehicles.

Nearby streets may also be closed for a time during the project.

The street and infrastructure work is expected to take at least a month to complete.

A resident inspector with EADS Group, the engineering firm on the project, will be on-site on most days and will be able to assist residents with questions and concerns.

Residents may also contact the city’s Community Development Department at 437-7841.

“While the construction activity and associated parking restrictions will pose temporary inconveniences for residents, the work will result in much-needed improvements and long-term benefits for those living on the block,” Community Development Director Sheila Boughner said.
