Sugarcreek elects leaders, swears in new members

Sugarcreek Borough Council appointed leaders and swore in two new members at the panel’s reorganization meeting Monday.

The meeting kicked off with council newcomers Matt Carlson and write-in winner Tom Hartle taking the oath of office administered by borough solicitor Brian Spaid.

Carlson is a former borough police chief.

Then, under the temporary rule of councilman Larry Baughman, James Speth nominated John McClelland for council president. That position had been held for a number of years by former councilman Bogan Goughler.

Hartle, who beat Goughler in the November election as a write-in, then nominated Carlson, who declined the nomination.

McClelland, who has served in various positions in borough government for nearly 50 years, including 36 as mayor, was unanimously elected council president.

Hartle then nominated Carlson for vice president, and Carlson accepted. Speth countered with a nomination of Baughman, who declined the nod.

Carlson was elected vice president by a 4-1 margin, with Speth casting the dissenting vote.

Hartle was voted chairman pro tem. That person acts as chair if the president and vice president aren’t present at a meeting.

Council will hold its first regular meeting of 2020 at 7 p.m. tonight.
