Area girls participate in programming camp

From staff reports

Several local girls participated in a summer computer programming camp sponsored by GEMS (Girls Excelling in Math and Science).

The event, titled AppZap, was conducted online July 25.

Teen mentors from the Pittsburgh area taught Venango County girls how to program using Javascript and then led them in creating apps using an online platform called BItsbox. These apps are available on the GEMS website.

The girls also used their new-found coding skills to program a wearable device called Codebug.

The coders have been invited to visit Birdbrain Technologies and the CMU campus in October to meet other innovators.

Among the local girls who participated were Maddy Bakker, Kayla DeShazo, Sarah Fisher, Tori McClelland, Isabella Mong, Emma Pfennigwerth, Alyssa Shick, Kaitlin Smith, Abby Walter, Morgan Rankin and Alma Elizabeth Reasoner.

Adult leaders were Laura Reasoner Jones and Christy Szafran.

GEMS clubs are gearing up for the fall with many new clubs and activities planned.

After-school clubs are planned for all elementary schools in Venango County, with new clubs starting in the Valley Grove and Cranberry school districts. Oil City Middle School has three clubs serving girls in grades 5 to 8.

More information on GEMS clubs and the resources available to girls, parents and interested adults can be found online at www.gemsclub.org.
