Oil Creek holds Volunteer Day

While many people could be found enjoying a sunny Saturday trout fishing or hiking and biking the trails, volunteers gathered to help with spring cleaning at Oil Creek State Park.

The day was organized by Ivy Kuberry, the environmental educational specialist and volunteer coordinator.

They started by cleaning up litter and trash.

Then the main group focused on pulling weeds and cleaning up the Jean Snyder Memorial Garden found at the main park office.

Another couple worked on hauling a mix of compost and topsoil from the parking lot to two new raised planter beds at the back of the office.

The memorial garden was installed with the help of the Venango County FLEX group.

It’s a pollinator garden filled with native wildflowers like echinacea and aster along with a variety of other plants including mint.

Refreshments were provided by the Friends of Oil Creek State Park.

Kuberry was thankful for all those who showed up on such a nice weekend.

Oil Creek State Park will become more active with events and classes beginning in May.

For anyone wishing to visit the park, the bridge over Oil Creek is closed for reconstruction so access to the main parking lot is unavailable when coming directly from Route 8. Visitors can get to the park by taking Cherry Creek Road (Route 227) in Rouseville and turning on Old Petroleum Center Road in Plumer.
